Opening Talk @ Jan Celliers Pre- and Primary School in Johannesburg
Ladies and gentlemen, parents, teachers, and most importantly, our young artists of tomorrow, I am truly delighted to welcome you to this wonderful children's school exhibition.
Today, we gather to celebrate the creative spirits of these young minds, who have poured their hearts and souls into their art.
As we walk through this incredible display of imagination, you'll notice that not all of the art you see is made on traditional paper. But let's take a moment to talk about a medium that has played a pivotal role in art throughout history: paper.
Papermaking, my friends, is a beautiful craft that dates back thousands of years. It's the canvas upon which countless stories have been written, and the surface upon which countless dreams have been drawn.
Today, we're here to explore the magic of handmade recycled paper, a sustainable and artistic endeavor that perfectly embodies the spirit of this exhibition.
Why handmade recycled paper, you might ask?
Well, it's not just about creating something beautiful; it's also about giving new life to materials that might otherwise be discarded. It's about understanding the importance of recycling and taking care of our planet, as well as nurturing our own creativity.
The art we see here today is a reflection of the creativity that thrives within each child's heart.. These works remind us of the beauty of handmade paper, where texture, color, and even tiny imperfections contribute to the unique character of each sheet.
In the journey of creating handmade recycled paper, old paper scraps, cloth fibers, and even leaves are given a second chance to shine. It's a process that teaches our children to appreciate the beauty in things often overlooked. It's a process that encourages us to think sustainably and foster a deep connection with nature.
So, as you explore the remarkable artwork on display today, I encourage you to appreciate not just the final pieces, but also the journey, the creative process, and the dedication that has gone into creating them.
And remember, just like recycled paper, these young artists are also given a chance to be reborn through their art.
Let us embrace the spirit of exploration, creativity, and sustainability that lies at the heart of this exhibition. Together, let's celebrate the young minds behind these unique creations and inspire one another to continue making a positive impact on our world through art and innovation.
Thank you for being here, and let's embark on this artistic journey together!
